A parking ticket year in review
A new year always brings a tear to my 63 year old eyes because the previous year was probably chock full of wonderful memories this old guy with a bad memory can't remember.
But, here's one 2011 memory I'll never forget...I was blessed with the birth of my first grandchild, Natalie Michelle Klein, who resides with her parents in the City by the Bay. She is 5 months old today. Happy B-day "Talie."
In honor of Natalie's birthday, I'd like to share my Top 10 parking ticket tips for 2011.
10 NYC Parking Ticket Tips
1. The world didn't end as predicted, but the NYC parking ticket Fine Settlement Program will...on January 31, 2012. Larry (that's me) will be manning the phones from 8A-7P on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 to answer any and all questions about how to beat your NYC parking tickets for FREE. Fire at will!
2. There is a "5-day grace period" following the installation of a new parking sign. If you are ambushed by a freshly painted sign displaying a new, unexpected parking rule, you can beat this ticket if it was issued within 5 days of the installation of the new sign.
3. Thou shall not kill, nor touch a parking ticket warrior. It's a felony. Despite your rage, don't direct a rant at the warrior when an evil orange epistle is placed under your windshield. Instead, direct your energy at beating your parking ticket.
4. Repeat after me...The only difference between standing and parking is the activity you can perform in a "NO Standing" or "NO Parking zone." In a NO Standing zone, you are permitted to stop temporarily (2 minutes or less), drop-off or pick-up a passenger curbside, and skedaddle.
In a NO Parking zone, you are permitted to stop temporarily (2 minutes or less), drop-off or pick-up a passenger and packages curbside, and skedaddle. I suggest you immediately activate your turn signal indicating your intent to return to the travel lane, while you are stopping and dropping.
5. Always, every time, without fail...Check the front of your parking ticket for mistakes. If a bite size bit of information (Required element) is omitted, misdescribed, or illegible you win, upon application.
6. Never, ever, fail to check the "place of occurrence" entered on your parking ticket. You'd be amazed at how many times a parking ticket warrior misdescribes the place of occurrence. It is parking ticket gold, and may reward you with a "get-out-of-jail-free" card.
7. It is customary for a parking ticket judge to dismiss a second parking ticket for the same violation, in the same parking space, if issued within 1 hour of the first NYC parking ticket (some judges will dismiss within 1-3 hours of the first parking ticket).
8. It is customary for a parking ticket judge to dismiss a second parking ticket for the same "status" violation (this is a parking crime involving your vehicle, i.e. registration expired, missing plates, etc., and not the "location" of the parking crime), if issued within 24-hours of the first parking ticket. [Note: Some judges insist that both NYC parking tickets be issued on the same day].
9. A 5-minute grace period applies to:
- ASP rules
- Muni-Meters
- Rule changes on parking signs
You are granted an extra 5 minutes to move your vehicle:
- At the beginning of ASP
- If ASP restriction is from 9A-11A...A warrior cannot issue a parking ticket until 9:06A
- At the expiration of your Muni-Meter time
- If you purchased time from 8A-9A, a warrior cannot issue a parking ticket until 9:06A
- At the beginning of a rule change on a parking sign
- If no standing is from 7A-4P, a warrior cannot issue a parking ticket until 7:06P
10. When you're right-FIGHT! Please make sure you present the proper proof, properly
Commentary
Knowledge is power. It is your only weapon to fight the evil empire, rogue parking ticket warriors, and rogue parking ticket judges. Every parking crime has a defense (s). You must correctly match your parking violation with the specific, applicable defense. Check your "common-sense" and "voice of reason" at the door. They will not help you beat a NYC parking ticket. And remember, there is no crying when fighting a NYC parking ticket.
Park safely.
Good luck.
