Commentary

The Department of Finance anticipates opening a treasure chest of parking ticket gold; but instead, may have unleashed the wrath of the NYC driving community that pays parking ticket fines (no questions asked). Time will tell.

This is bull crap. It's enough that as a New Yorker I have to deal with these rent a cop meter maids, who barely speak English, who do not understand what the signs say or mean, who do not care about doing what is right. They are just morons who are unable to maintain their automatic ticket machines. You know how many times I find errors on my tickets! You know how many times I challenge the ticket citing NYC DOT traffic regs and I am rejected by a supposed judge. You know how long it takes to appeal and over turn the guilty verdict. These people are nothing more than theives who rob citizens daily. The DOT removes twelve hour parking lots and replaces them with four hour parking spots, and never inform people of the change. They are conartist and deserve to be disband.

not surprising, the NYC DOT is always looking for more revenue, I'm surprised it took them this long. I realize now that this is always going to be a losing battle. and as far as the new program is concerned, it's bullocks! they know most people don't have the time or wherewithal to go down in person for a reduced fine.

William & Granger,

Good morning.
I share your passion and deep disdain for this bad behavior by the NYC DOF.

I am hopeful the NYC driving community collectively put their metaphorical foot down, and fight their parking tickets (when they're right).

There are approximately 7M people out there who pay (without question). If these "independent voters" change their behavior, watch how fast the settlement program returns.

Thanks to you guys for taking your valuable time to share your opinions. They matter to all of us.

Larry,

I have an idea to help!!

Why not have Steven Spielberg organize a public strike that has the public motivated to refuse to park in NYC.

Shades of Peruvian jungle in 1936 could see shunning of eyes against the deadly DOTs flying about as the purging of evil Con Artist Bands of ark raiders is done.

Being tied up to a Public transport post for the duration as an alternative to death by attack from the illiterate “killer on the loose and the lady is the target” clawing to get to the treasure.

A city empty of cars filling muni-meters and in the public the habit to pay settlement fines online rather than having to personally appear for a hearing would leave bull crap morons with disabled bollocks.

Then Harrison Ford aided by Karen Allen could run for Mayor and make it good again before it becomes a Planet of the Apes.

Just a thought.

I always love your ingenious writing and the passion of the other responses. George Lucas would be proud. Keep the coming.

Happy New Year

Cheers Gordon

Gordon,

Welcome my dear friend. Great to hear from you. I love your humour (ever think about publishing a blog full of funny stuff?). I know, I know, too fluffy for ya.

My best and most sincere good wishes for a healthy, happy, and a year full of mirth and merriment.

Looking forward to your next comment.

PS...I have an idea. Why not write the comment first, and I'll prepare the article to go along with it? I'm counting backwards from 100...99..76...54...You better get going.

I never was great in math, and counting backwards makes me dizzy.

Are you up to the challenge?
Posted @ Thursday, January 05, 2012 7:36 PM by lawrence berezin
Larry ,

The mind boggles. Hm!! joining a straight man funny man team would be great? Like "Rohan and Martin" reincarnated, eh?”. Or, would it be better as a Marty McFly and Dr. Emmett Brown with a Back to the Future influencing role?

We could do that with a twist on the "Who wants to be a Millionaire” model and ask for question to the 4 answers we already have.

Take you pick and yes why not. I like a challenge. It would be fun.

As for counting backwards to get somewhere, that is confusing to me too. Bit like walking up the down escalator. Mind you the NYC-DOF seems to do both well.

Yes, I am not sure I am up to doing blogs with funny stuff. Bit fluffy yes. Maybe Twik or Tweet works. Anyway Life is a blog if you take time to enjoy it. I know I enjoy particpating with you.

Cheers Gordon

I got a ticket while sitting in my car. I was parked in my car with the hazard lights on waiting for a friend. Matter of fact, the car was running and it was pouring down rain. I never saw a meter person ... they sent the ticket to my house today saying I owe $125, the ticket is from November! November!!!!! I hope the DOT burns in hell!

Charisse,

Good morning.
I hear you. It is very frustrating feeling bushwhacked while simply parked waiting for a friend on a rainy night. Sorry for your parking ticket pain.

Here's a tip that may apply...If you parked your car in a metered zone and didn't pay the toll, or in a zone that prohibited stopping, standing, or parking, the fact you activated your hazard lights, remained behind the wheel, waiting for a friend is not a defense. I'd hate for you to get more tickets for this activity.

Good luck.

yeah that dept should rot in hell ASAP.
The judges rule however they want "even with proof". They must be told not to accept anything. Damn appeals are just as bad. ASK ME HOW I KNOW. several occasions.
TOO MANY PEOPLE DON'T GIVE A RATS patuti,
The city SUCKS, can't have a vehicle, gotta have a lot of money, cameras everywhere, streets are atrocious, tolls too damn high and outside of 2 great museums everything is too damn expensive.
I'm moving out, FOR REAL, looking for a place now in Va. I'd rather be a tourist, as a matter of fact, YES i will be a tourist. :-)

Giovani,

Good evening.
I applaud your passion, and colorful description of a real, bad, decision by the NYC DOF pulling the plug on the parking ticket fine settlement program.

NYC's loss is Virginia's gain.
Good luck.

I got 46 parking tickets within 2 months, 1-2 a day almost everyday(or every other day) through out that time period. 12 in judgment. The marshalls seized my car, while i was in it w/a passenger, stopped at a light while my car was in drive(not sure if that is or isnt legal), i had a medical reason, documentation, proof, for why i parked illegally all of those times, showed the judge, got nothing reduced(aside from a few that got dismissed), and now i owe like 4000k, plus marshall fees. I cant get a a payment plan because i lost my job over the passed few months that i was sick(while inwas getting the tickets). Is there anything i can do or am i just screwed?

Kenneth,

Good morning. What a sad tale of parking ticket pain. If I'm hearing you correctly...you fought all the parking tickets, beat some, lost many, and are not eligible for a payment plan.

If correct, and the time to appeal (30days) has expired, I recommend you see a lawyer, as soon as possible. I'm sure there are options a lawyer can offer you to help ease the burden.

Good luck.

The program ended early. I received an expired inspection sticker ticket on Jan 26 and sent in with an explanation (family crisis) and the case was heard by a judge 10 days later and I was ordered to pay the full fine. The prior month, December, my wife received the same inspection ticket, and the same letter was sent to DOF and a reduced fine was offered (and accepted). But in that case, I was also screwed. The decision said that I had until December 30 to respond. I sent the payment on 12/26, but on Jan 5 I received an order from the judge to pay the full amount. I wrote back that I already sent the reduced payment, and they said they received it too late (Jan 6). I told them they did not give the mail enough time to get there (3 business days) and they said too bad, pay the extra money.

Lee,

Good morning.
It is never easy dealing with the Evil Empire. I'm sorry for your bad experience.

The point you share is very well-taken. Never, ever send money or important correspondence to the DOF by regular mail. Send it by certified mail, return receipt requested so you can prove the exact date of delivery.

Be well.
Best,
Larry

The problem was not their disclaiming receiving payment. It was that the notice I received said "if accepting reduced fine offer, respond by 12/30" which was a Friday. Then the judge tried the case on Wed. If I waited until the last day to respond (mail the check) this would only allow 3 days for the mail to arrive. The city admitted they received my check on Thursday, the day after the judge ruled. I wrote and told them the check was in the mail withing their time frame, and it was not my fault the mail was slow. And that they should allow ample time for the postal service. I had 3 special traffic agents from 311 speak with the DOF, and they refused to budge.

But from now on, I will certainly heed your advice. In fact, I am going to the post office today regarding my wifes ticket. She was dropping off our 9 year old in a No Standing School Day zone, sitting in the car watching her walk in the door. A warrior that was in the process of ticketing the car in front of her noticed her leaving and ran over and scanned her registration as she pulled away. She never actually received the ticket. I found it on their website, and it listed the car as a red 4DSD when the registration has it as a PL SUBN. Actually it is a plum colored station wagon. And he wrote the signage as No Standing Anytime, instead of 8-4 School Days.

Lee,

Good to hear back from you.

You are a winner on your wife's parking ticket. Kudos for your astute observations.

Although color is not a required element, body type is! And, as you know, the warrior must enter the correct days/times (another defect).

Nicely done.

Let me know when the parking ticket is dismissed.

Thanks for sharing your parking ticket experience. It benefits all of us.
