The Wacky World of Parking Tickets

Our dear friend from Australia and Bangkok, Gordon Wood, anyc parking tickets regular visitor and contributor to our blog, sent us this article about parking ticket pain and suffering from Australia.  Here's the back story...

nyc parking ticketToday July 1, while in Melbourne, what better way to spend time but to have lunch with my son Dan. He manages city based construction projects. He told me in the course of a week parking fines mount up as they often had little choice when moving people and equipment into city sites. Occupational hazard he called it.

But one his colleagues is not so ambivalent. Aggrieved when he got fined for taking too long to pay the meter for a parking space he had just occupied for 38 seconds, he sent this letter to the Melbourne City Council.

Parking Ticket Tip: If you are issued a NYC parking ticket while walking to a Muni-Meter to pay your "toll;" or if you're on your way back to your vehicle after securing your Muni-Meter receipt, you may raise it as a DEFENSE to a Muni-Meter violation

I love sharing parking ticket stories with friends from around the world. Gordon Wood is our international man of mystery, who has some very valuable things to say. Before you click on the link and introduce yourself to Gordon, take a few moments to enjoy a beautiful  ballad, "Waltzing Matilda," in honor of our Australian friend. If you're curious about the meaning of the words in the song, click on

Gordon Wood is Executive Director of Sherwood Group Consulting and Non Executive Director and adviser to a number of Australian and Asian Companies. He describes himself as a jack around the traps of what is now described as business performance management. He contributes to the industry, which he joined in its formation days in the 80′s, by helping people get the value from the high standards it sets. He is also an evangelist of the art and participates with many of his peers in business thought leader sessions, education services in universities and public forums in Asia and Australia.

What do you think the outcome of our Australian friend parking ticket dispute will be? Ticket dismissed? or pay up, mate?

Law enforcement agencies from around the world frequently engage in exchange programs involving police officers. After reading that article, it appears that NYC and Melbourne have a parking ticket warrior exchange program!

Hey Kirill,
Always great to hear from you. Nicely said. I think you're right!

Let's give this syndrome a name: METER DISEASE. I only heard about this disease a few days ago and it was through this site. I honestly never thought this could happen. And in Australia? Those people are so easy going and fair minded! Waltzing Mathilda, where are you?

Norman,

Silly rules enforced by robots. How about an international parking ticket protest day?

I love the song. "Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me
And he sang as he stowed that jumbuck in his tucker-bag
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me"

What a glorious video! That's the real Australia, not dirty tricks. I worked in a bar for years with a singer. People from all over the world came in there. Every time someone from Australia came in they wanted to hear that song. So we gave it to them. Such good times.

"International Parking Protest Day" is a great idea! August is not a busy month for "Days." We should aim for 2011.

One of the most famous signs in New York - seen nowhere else is

DON'T EVEN THINK OF PARKING HERE!"

Thought you should include it.

Corrine,

I, too, love the sign. We have it in our gallery. I'll post it on Friday in Larry's Blog.

Great suggestion.
Thanks!
